Opinions and ideas of what to use my farm for

Hi folks, I'm seeking opinions and ideas for possible uses for my farm. When I bought it it was wall to wall grapes. I've removed half of them already and the other half are coming out straight after harvest in February. I can't wait to see them go! This will leave me with 24 acres of cleared farmland. I have a high security water allocation although it a bit expensive but it's a bearable cost. I have 8ML of water storage via two dams, one of which fills naturally after good rain.

Weed control questions

Hi all, hope everyone is well! I have 2 major weed problems currently on my property. A yellow flowering thistle and St Johns Wort. The wort covered and entire side of a hill however the thistle mostly along my seasonal creek. I gave the thistle a good whack with a spray while the creek was dry and then mulched up under my mower blades. I think our problem was we didn't get to it soon enough as our property changed hands when we should have been beginning to spray. We took over our property in Late October.

Leasing farmland within cooee of Newcastle

Hi,

I am wondering about leasing land for farming in the Hunter Valley NSW, I have not found much available on commercial real estate websites. Could anyone suggest what might be a good way to find landholders that might wish to lease land?

Damp hay

Hello, I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping for some help today. This week I've had two paddocks baled (~120 small square bales). I was able to get in approx. 30 to 40 bales and the others are still in the paddock. Unfortunately, last night we had a shower for about 5 minutes. It came down relatively heavy in that time. This morning, I can feel that the outside of the bales are damp. I've stood them all up in teepees in hope they dry out today. It is sunny today and about 20C with a slight breeze. Is there any hope of saving the rest of my bales? Any advice will be much appreciated.

Advice on buying a new box trailer - can it transport livestock?

Hi all,

I'm about to buy a new box trailer that will be a big help for me on the farm, but I want to make sure that it's perfectly possible to use it for hauling materials as well as transporting livestock like sheep when necessary. I'm presuming that it's perfectly fine to transport sheep in a box trailer (say 8x5) that has a tall cage on it, like a 100cm cage (which is in addition to the 30cm box sides), right?

Choosing location

Hi - we are looking to purchase a hobby/small farm but are concerned about unknown mining/other activity that will affect the water/soil/air/environment. Are there registers that we can check for this sort of thing when considering an area?

Sugar Cane Farm - Near Bundaberg

Hi all,

I am relatively green to farming but as lifestyle change I am looking at purchasing a 33Ha Sugar cane (29 Ha under cane).

I have checked out the property and have found that it has:

- 100ML of water allocation with pump and irrigation equipment

- Sandy Loam soil type

- Currently returning 90-100 tons/Ha

Registering property into a stud

Hi there

We are fairly new to the farming industry, we have had our property for 15 years all those years with cattle but never into purebread. Now we are looking to go into artificial insemination & are becoming a member of Angus Australia.

My question is how do we register our property to a stud?

Angus australia dont need it to be a stud but my dad would like to register it.

Can anyone clarify? We are in NSW

Thanks

Kaylee

Trauma calves hoof

Hi..I have a 4 day old calf..whose mother stood on her hoof and removed about 1 inch of the poor things toe..we stopped the bleeding with bandage and sprayed on yellow lotion antiseptic and then bandaged with elastic bandage ... will be giving the calf pennicillin tonight.  How often should we change bandage..keeping the mother and calf penned and calf is putting weight on back leg and nursing properly..Should we be doing anything else.  Scared to remove dressing in case bleeding starts again.

Thanks.
