The New Kid on the Block...

Hi, I've decided that I'd like to start farming beef cattle in Central Victoria (Euroa/Strathboggie area) in the next six months. I'm thinking of purchasing 100 Acres and running 30-40 head of cattle. Whilst I grew up on a farm as a child that was a long time ago and so I have alot to learn. I've been doing some reading but am open to ideas and thoughts around where I'm thinking of buying, what sort of cattle should I run, What should I watch out for with land in that area? I look forward to some feedback.

Hi, we recently purchased 24 acres in the Gympie, QLD region. We don't run any cattle but have two horses and a kelpie, who adores the place. We have a good history of the property and unfortunately the owners immediately prior to us were unable to maintain the pastures as was done previous to them, so our main challenges are getting them back under control again. And of course RAIN - we would love some rain! We are hoping to learn lots from here. Mick N Shaz

Looking forward to being on this forum, and learning from our expirienced farmers. We have had our 125 acre block for just about two years now and currently lease 100 acres to a cropping farmer. We would like to become self sustainable in a few years. We originally had six calves, running on the other 25 acres, but found when they got a bit older, that our fences werent good enough to hold them in. We sold them at 10 months making reasonable profit. Cattle farming is not for us. We are now keen to get into yabbie farming, as our two dams are full of them.

Alpacas and ticks

Hi. As the drought progresses we have had to open up our bush paddocks to our herd. I’m noticing more and more ticks especially in their ears. The advice from the vet (none of which are all that knowledgeable about alpacas) Is ivomectin injection. Our seller doesn’t know as they’ve never had a problem with ticks. Is this the right way to go. How often do they need to be treated? Has anyone found a better / more cost effective alternative. Any natural remedies? Thankyou Chrissy

About to be HobbyFarmers

Hi all, my name is Ron and my wife is Tracy. We are purchasing our new lifestyle farm in a place called Humbug Scrub, SA. 19.5 Acres. 5 acres around the home is cleared and the rest is lovely native bush. Tracy and I are making this move from suburbia to improve our lifestyle and set up a place for future retirement or semi-retirement. The farm has a grove of macadamias and olives, abundant fruit trees and small veggie garden. We both work full time at the moment but I love the idea of slowly reducing our days working in a regular job and spending more time on the farm.

Where to start..

Gday All, I'm currently living on 1/2 acre block in Emerald Victoria. I hope to be buying acreage over the next few years with the view to farming possibly cattle, chickens but not sure as yet. I was hoping I could get some advise as where to start. I would love to get some time on a working farm. Would this be beneficial? Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Terry

Working on our dream

Hi All, My name is Adrian and I am from Melbourne. My wife and 3 kids are looking at a tree change and wanting to start looking at moving to the bush and starting a sustainable farm for us with a view to turning some profits. We are both realists and understand we cant just switch this on and away we go.

Almost Time to Make the Move

With years passing by (faster these days it seems), it is almost time time to make the move from city life to a childhood dream of living in the country. With little in the way of savings and still having a mortgage, the plan is to sell my outer city home and with what is left after paying off the mortgage, find a small holding of around 20 acres and under 100 acres. I want to run a small boutique boarding kennel and would like to run a small number of sheep mostly for herding training of our dogs (they are working breeds). If there is room some, Alpacas.

GENERAL FARM QUESTIONS

HI, I have recently purchased 40 acres in Berringa, Victoria and have a few questions: 1. My land is surrounded by privately owned bush blocks with very large trees that fall onto my land knocking over the fencing. Whose responsibility is it in regards to replacing the fences. 2. Am I allowed to cut the trees that overhang onto my land. 3. What animals are easier to farm? I was looking into Boer Goats. 4. In regards to a planning permit how many animals do I need to have to get one? Thank you this forum is wonderful so far. Natalie

New member and farmer questions

Hi, new member and farmer. I have access to approx 60 acres and considering running a couple dozen hereford for beef production, I'm wondering if this is the best starting point financially and experience wise or should we be looking at sheep?
