Alpacas and ticks

Hi. As the drought progresses we have had to open up our bush paddocks to our herd. I’m noticing more and more ticks especially in their ears. The advice from the vet (none of which are all that knowledgeable about alpacas) Is ivomectin injection. Our seller doesn’t know as they’ve never had a problem with ticks.
Is this the right way to go. How often do they need to be treated?
Has anyone found a better / more cost effective alternative. Any natural remedies?
Thankyou
Chrissy

Hi Chrissy,

Welcome to the small farm forum and thanks for the question.

I am not an alpaca expert so im not 100% sure if there are any alternatives, we do have an active Facebook discussion group (with a couple of vets as members). It would be worth joining and posting the question there. If you follow the link to our Facebook page the discussion group is pinned to the top of the page.
