Hi!!! from Charters Towers (North QLD)

Hi Everyone!

Im Tash and me, my husband and our kids live about 1/2 hour from Charters Towers on 100 acres (give or take).

We raise commercial chooks for a living and also breed purebred chickens, but can never keep up with demand for the purebreds but we try!  We also make the best goats milk soap using milk from our own goats. Between the 2 and various other dabblings, we make enough $$ for both of us to stay at home full time, with some sacrifices of course (yeah, drinking Jim Beam instead of Jack Daniels lol)

This is my dream come true...but I know nothing!

I need to know everything!

We are living on 360 acres and have 4 horses, 4 calves, 2 piglets, 10 ducklings, 15 chickens (was 16 but had to chop one of their heads off today as was very sick!), 1 rooster, 3 dogs, 4 children!!

Plan to get more cattle, some sheep and goats.

The idea is self-sustainability (L-plate vege gardener also!) .

I joined this site to get some help as I am also new to the area and don't know any farmers.

Howdy All

We thought we would join up and see what this is all about. We use the term 'Farming' very loosely as we do not really farm on our six acres. Half of it is rainforest and permanent creek. We have a 130 year old Colonial house and try to do the sustainability thing as mush as possible. We have a huge vegie garden which continues to expand. As you can tell it really is a hobby/lifestyle farm 100% subsidised from off farm income. We would like to use one acre or so for some form of income but have not come up with a product that is viable for such a small area.

G'day from Murrumbateman

G'day Team,

Jolls here. New to farming; just purchased 7 acres with 12 chooks and a small orchard. Was used by the previous owner for horses; looking to introduce small cattle - Galloways probably (not that I have found any for sale yet). Looking forward to learning from the wisdom of others as opposed to gaining experince by mistakes wherever possible. I do have a plan B if farming proves to be too hard: at least now I have a big enough shed to restore my classic bikes!

Cheers and Beers
