My Introduction and a request for advice - raising sheep and poulty for private consumption in victoria

Hi

My name is Michael and I am moving to Indigo Shire near Wodonga VIC in the next few years to start a hobby farm on approx 7 acres. I am looking at getting a few sheep and other animals that I plan on raising and slaughtering.

The advice that I am chasing relates to raising some sheep and other livestock for private meat consumption:

- Is there any requirement for me to obtain an identification code from the DPI for the hobby farm if I am only raising some four legged lawn mowers which will end up in the freezer?

Hi All,

I first want to say I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this web site. Well I'm sad to say I am yet to purchase a farm however if all goes well I plan on changing that with in the next 12 months. You see I've just been made redundant from my job of 15 years and I would like to take advantage of the situation by investigating the possibility of owning my own small farm business.

Agistment

For the past 12 months we have rented out our farm house and left the 140 acres vacant, but now however we will be relocating to the farm house at Christmas and we are looking to agist some of our acres, given we will be there to keep an eye on things and also to help raise funds for our own stock.  What is the current agistment rate for cattle and horses in the Tamworth area?

Beef cattle farm

Hey all, we were wondering if anyone with beef cattle in nsw would be happy for us to pop in for a day one weekend? We are currently studying a beef cattle course and there are some parts that we would love to see first hand and of course have a chat ;)

Let us know if anyone wouldn't mind too much?

cheers

Certifications required to raise pigs commercially

I have heard recently that if one wanted to raise pigs commercially, they now legally require a Cert III in Animal Husbandry and 12 months experience on a pig farm. Apparently this is regulated by the RSPCA, who can come onto your property without a warrant, at any time, to inspect your pigs and ensure that you comply with the regulations.

I can't seem to find any information on the net relating to this.

Can you help? Is this indeed the case?

Hello from a small farm in Nanango

Hi everyone, I live on eight acres in south east Queensland, Australia, with my husband Peter and two dogs. We have a passion for small-scale organic farming and producing and eating real food. We keep chickens (mainly Rhode Island Reds), beef steers, two jersey cows and a big vegetable garden. I write a blog about our farm to both inspire and help others who are interested in self-sufficiency, sustainability and permaculture.

I'm looking forward to using this forum to learn more about small farming.
