Flood gate replacement

Hi fellow members, during this wet spell my floodgate has been damaged . it is a chicken wire type mesh suspended from wires with a base of star pickets attached. I've seen corrurgated iron swing types and was thinking of trying that out, any body got any hints?

Hi there,

if you are running cattle then you will need something more substantail than the mesh gate you have in place. The problem with mesh is that when you have a big flow of water due to heavy rainfall after big storms, it will carry lots of rubbish such as branches and trees with it washing out your flood gate. To avoid this a flood gate should be constructed that will block stock from using the creeek bed to go under the fence into the next paddock or property. The flood gate should also be capable of floating up with the water flow and then as the water falls after the flood, fall back into place. To do this put a strainer post on either side of the water way above the flood level and run a 2-3cm steel cable between them across the water way. Run your fencing wires across and then suspend a log from the cable by several strands of cable that are long enough to allow the log to hang low enough to block access to the other side of the fence via the waterway by your stock.
