Bullants

Hi

We have just bought a property and  was wondering the best way to get rid of a large bullant nest which also is safe for our cows?

Hi Wendy,

I had to deal with this problem about 15 years ago. You will need to wait until the ants are in the nest at night and then get together the following: 2lt of bleach, a 1m x1m  square of Visqueen plastic (the kind they use to lay under concrete slabs before they pour them), some rocks or bricks to weight the edges of the plastic down. Proceed as follows: locate the entrance holes in the nest and pour all of the bleach into them. Then quickly lay the sheet of plastic over the nest and weigh it down with the rocks or bricks. leave it for about 2 weeks and the Chlorine gas released from the bleach should kill the lot. then you can remove the plastic and flatten out the nest if you wish as they should all be gone. I have been told that some people use diesel or petrol for the job, but personally I wouldn't because their residues would contaminate the soil.

It worked for me and also was completely effective on the termite nest that was starting to be built beneath the house. this method is probably not approved by our Green friends because it uses chlorine, but then chlorine gas is used in private and public swimming pools all over Australia anyway.

hope this helps,

Barb
