Gday

Hi All

I'm Andrew. My partner Lizzie and I have a small (180 acre with 90 arable acres) property in Pingelly WA. I've had the land for a few years but have recently moved to the property in temporary accomadation while we owner build our house and make the land more useful and rehab some small sections. I've been lurking around the site for a week or so and thought I should do the righty and introduce myself.

It must be an exciting time for you building a house. Out of interest what have you been doing with your farm for the past few years and what are your plans moving forward?

Hi Charlie

 

Have not done much over the last few years. Planted about 8000 native trees and shrubs on and around a small salt effected area. Done a small amount of fencing to limit access to the bushland by stock and to repair/replace old fences and built a 9m x 12m shed (now 50% accommodation.) And slowly acquiring equipment like tractor and implements. Have been leasing the arable area to a farmer to run sheep who last year ran way to many sheep on it and reduced the arable area to a dust bowl. The benefit of this is it’s allowed me to do a bit of weed control and see what is really below the pasture.

Neither myself nor Liz are farmers so we are learning as we go have made a few mistakes (like putting up a 1.2km fence upside down) we have had to rectify but have learned from each one.

It's only now that we are there regularly that things are starting to progress and we are really getting a feel for utilising the land. I have a few Lowline cows with plans to slowly increase numbers and start a small breeding program. A fair bit of fencing to do starting again this weekend and some rehab of overworked pasture. The plan is to do all of this, including building the house without going into any debt. Hence the slow and steady approach.
