Managing 10 acres

We are looking at a 10 acre property. We love the house but the property has fully manicured lawns and gardens needing lots of work. We are retired and don't want to spend our days just keeping a good lawn. We want to minimise man hours with maybe a few sheep and perhaps plant lots of bushes to cut down the amount of acres needing work. There is a small established vege garden some fruit trees and a chook pen.

Partnership Farming/land ownership - some questions before entering in

G'Day all, I hope everyone is well.

A very close mate and I have both been looking for properties (approx 200-400 acres) in the Burnett / Darling Downs / East Maranoa regions of QLD.

Both of our goals are to run a small cattle farm to supplement costs, and have a weekend getaway as a bonus.

Hi just a quick question who do you use for your farm insurance.

I just got a quote for our new farm 100 acres Port Macquare area and was shocked its over $2000 even with Coles insurance and thats just the house and contents.

Thanks in advance .

primary producer qualification

Good morning all, I have read an older post on page 12 asking about the $20,000 assessable income test. One of the replies had a link to the ATO website for Non- commercial (losses?) which explains that to claim the losses from a business you must earn under $250,000 from other sources. On the left side is a bunch of headings one of which is EXCEPTIONS & it says to claim losses from primary production you need to earn less than $40,000 from other sources? I will be asking an accountant in the near future regarding this but in the meantime can anyone clarify this somewhat for me.

Dexter Cattle or Small Breed/Miniature Cattle Breeders in CQ

Hi All,

We have recently purchased 30 acres in Bungundarra, Yeppoon area and we are wanting to run a small herd of cattle just as lawn mowers/pets.

I have done my research on breeds etc and read all the books but what I am having real trouble with is finding breeders of small/miniature cattle in Rockhampton area or even the Central Qld area!  Ideally I would like to run dexters but also like galloway cattle and miniature herefords.

Going on holidays/weekends away when farming

Hi everyone,

We are few months away from buying our first patch of land.

Our aim is to start small with some chickens and veggies and then goats.

Firstly to be more self sustainable and obviosluy learn new skills and then hopefully to make some profit down the line, esp with goats.

My biggest fear at the moment is, what do you do with your animals if you go away for the weekend or holidays?

We are a young(ish) family that love to go camping and seeing the country.
