Information: solar powered drip irrigation system

Hi,

This is information rather than a question. I built a drip irrigation system that operates with a small 12V pump, which is connected to a solar charger and battery. The system has been very troublesome, so I am posting some info about my tribulations in case it is helpful to anybody else.

The system consists of:

* 12V 14.7 litres per minute, 40 psi pump (cheap pump, you can get them online for well under $100)

* 12V gel cel battery (now 26 AH, but started with 12 AH)

* 40 watt solar panel (but started with 8 watt)

Developed by MEA, Australia's soil moisture monitoring specialists, the GDot is a simple visual display to help you know when to irrigate. No more  guesswork!

Weaner rings

We are presently using weaner rings on a number of our calves and note that some are still sucking even with the ring on.

Has anyone come accross this before.

The ring is yellow with barbs.

Measuring water flows to troughs remotely

I want to measure the water flows to the troughs on my farm. I can't find a meter that attaches to 50mm pipe. It would be good if the data could be recorded and/or studied remotley.

I can find industrial types but the cost is huge and the order is too small to intrest the sales people i talk to, so they rarely call back

Anybody got any thoughts?

Consolidating property

Dear farm expert

I would like to know what the proses and the costs are to consolidate two small neighboring properties in NSW. As I understand a property must be min 40ha in size to be able to get a building entitlement. The two properties are just over 70ha combined. Will it be worth buying with the intent to consolidate?

Thanking you

Ivan

Cattle crush working side

I have just purchased a cattle property and am looking to replace the old cattle yards with a new set of portable ones. I have noticed that most yards have the crush's with the working side on the inside/holding pen? I have worked with cattle in the crush from the outside (offside) of the yards in the past, is there a reason why most crush's have the working side on the inside? I would think that this would be more hazardous having all your branding irons and working with your back to a pen full of animals?

Does anyone have this product? Anyone heard anything about them?

I saw an ad on google and did some research. The owner Ian created the product and runs the company himself. He also owns his own farm so I am inclined to believe the product works. My local store doesnt stock it but they think it would be a good idea to try. Seen the video online of how it work sand look great.

With summer fast approaching, now is the time to start thinking about summer drenching of cattle as part of your strategic roundworm control program. In  south-eastern Australia, Ostertagia ostertagi (small brown stomach worm) is the major cause of production losses from worm infections in cattle.
