Small cattle breeds

Hi all, I've be been doing a lot of googling and reading on the small breed cattle, now I would like to meet the breeders and their animals. My question to those in the know is, will there be any opportunities to to see these guys in any of the shows around the Northern Rivers over the next few months or is there an event over the border (Qld) might get to. Cheers Jk

Hi JK,

The following link may be of use to you:

There are quite a few country shows in Qld. I'm sorry I can't help you with other states. Most of these local shows have small breed cattle such as Lowline and Dexter cattle on show. There are also shows that are devoted specifically to small breeds of cattle such as the one held in Childers each year which is only for small breed cattle.

I don't know if you want them as pets or to breed them for a hobby, but personally, because I make a living from them, I like to breed standard size cattle such as Murray Grey, naturally polled and very quiet, as they are much easier to market. The market for the smaller breeds is very limited and many cattle sale yards don't accept the smaller breeds of cattle.

I hope that some of this is useful to you.

Regards,

Barb

Hi Jk,

Welcome to the forum.

There is an excellent small cattle breeds expo held each year (November) at Rocklea in Brisbane. Small cattle breeds featured include ausline, australian lowline, bramalow, dexter, miniature grey, miniature galloway, belted galloway and boran.

I have spoken with the organiser and due to the dry weather conditions in SE Queensland they have decided to post pone the event until early next year.

Below is a link to the website

Look forward to hearing how your venture into small cattle farming progresses.

Charlie

Hi JK

We have done a lot of research on cattle breeds and being relatively new to farming found that some breeds have bad temperaments and difficult to control.  After visiting a large number of square meater studs we have decided to take on square meater cattle.  They are not classed as small breeds although they have a smaller statute, which is not as intimidating when working in the yards with them.  We are at Tenterfield and are open to you visiting the cattle in their own environment. We are in our third year with them and have not been happier.  We have recently had a yearling steer and weaner heifer slaughtered and were MSA graded and are exceptional eating.  Take a look at them on my facebook page Collian Square Meaters.  Call of inbox me if you would like to take a look at our wonderful cattle. We had purchased a Stud Bull and have 25 breeders who have had no problems when calving.
