New Member - Northern Rivers NSW

Dear all

I am a new member and would appreciate your help.

I am reviewing purchasing a modest property (20-30 hectares) in the Northern River area of NSW (near Byron Bay). Sydney CBD life ain't what it used to be.

To my knowledge, the Northern Rivers area enjoys good rainfall and tends to look very 'green'. I note a lot of locals are growing nuts (macadamia, etc) and some run beef cattle.

I am thinking of run beef cattle as perhaps one of the easier beasts to start with, and just wondered if anyone might be willing to share their experience with me as to how many beef cows per hectare I could expect in this region? Even if you have any suggestions on what I might spray the land with to improve the grass/clove quality?

I have found a few websites but some of the jaron is maybe too much for someone crunching simple numbers.

Could I trouble you too for an estimation of the current spot price for a beef cow? And how many years it takes to reach selling age?

If I could, I would buy you a beer for helping me.

Thank you

Hi Ashcow,

Welcome to the small farm forum, thanks for the question.

The number of head you can run will depend on a large number of factors including rainfall, soil type, pasture species and grazing management. For the area you are looking at the stocking rate can range from 5-20 DSE/ ha (dry sheep equivalent).

We offer a farm pre purchase inspection service and have a consultant that covers the northern rivers, feel free to drop me an email if you are interested.

 Thanks,

Charlie
