New to farming, my adventure so far...

Hi,

I don't have any questions but just wanted to introduce myself and tell you a little about my farm journey so far...I decided to make my first home, a home in the country. It took nearly 18mths to find my perfect home, but at last, I found my little piece of heaven in the Southern Downs region of QLD.

My aim is to be self suffiecent, "live off the grid" as much as possible and to one day earn a small income to live comfortably (ie. pay those bills we can't get out of).

I am fortunate enough to have my parents living with me as I travel for work. We have 20 free range hens & a few roosters. We are working on fixing fences to have some cattle within the next couple of months. We've had great success with several vegie patches and have recently planted a few fruit trees.

I didn't realise how big of a problem the weeds on my property were until my first summer. That pretty yellow flower I soon discovered was St Johns Wort and those yummy Blackberries were actually a noxious weed! Thankfully the Southern Downs Council have been very helpful with information and guidence and we are working towards eradicating these weeds.

Life on a farm, even a small one, is never boring!

Thank you for a really great website Farmstyle and I look foward to reading everyones stories and questions.

Happy farming,

Toni

Welcome to the site Toni. Keep us posted on your progress with lots of pictures.

If you are looking at self sufficiency then do some googling on permaculture and swales. Water is a real problem and swales are a great tool to help in this area.

Cheers
Rob.

Hi Toni,

Welcome to Farmstyle, great to have you on-board.

Thanks for your kind words regarding the website, I'm pleased that you enjoy it.

I look forward to hearing your farming stories, it sounds like you have already learnt a lot. Be sure to join in the conversation as I'm sure there are others out there who are in a similar position to yourself and would love to hear of your experiences.

 Hi Toni,

Living off the grid - is an interesting  way to live. I was only watching vids on utube about it . So many ideas  and most are simple and affective. Solar power is a bonus for any smart farmer .

I look forward to  your updates

Happy farming

Mick
