Hi everyone

Hi All,

Great to join this forum. I am a full time employee working in IT industry however due to my love for the farming I am planning to start a small farm (along with my full time employment). I am looking at buying in Whittlesea Vic north of. Any Whittlesea members who can help will be greatly appreciated.

I am planning to start small 3-5 acre. Starting with cattle (basically buying small cattle) raising and fattening them and then selling them. Any advice in this regard would be appreciated. My main concern is

·         Will I be able to run  a small cattle farm (may be 10 cattle) at start with a part time helper

·         How easy is to sell the animals (I know it depends on many factors) but all things equal how easy is to sell beef cattle

Many thanks

Hi Imran,

great idea to breed and sell cattle, but you will not be able to run many head of cattle on a small acerage of 3-5 acres. 10 head, even a small breed such as Dexter or Lowline cattle will eat quite a lot and may need to be hand fed- a very expensive proposition. You might need to consider buying a larger property of 20 or more acres.

There are a few things to look at when buying a property.

!. How many head can you run on the block.

2. Does it have adequate water as cattle drink more than you would think especially when pregnant or feeding claves.

3. small breed cattle are not that easy to sell unless they are going to other small property owners to be used as lawnmowers or pets. Most of the cattle sale yards don't want to take them and only want to take the standard size cattle.

I don't want to put you off, but it is better to consider everything before you invest a lot of money in your project.

Good luck and I hope all goes well for you,

Barb
