Farmers are the most hard working people I know

Hi I'm Jo Mitchell. My husband and I brought our farm near Hervey Bay 5 years ago hoping to create something spectacular with what was a very rundown 50 acres of land. It has taken us most of the five years we have been there to get the place to where it is now. We are lucky in that we live on the beach with a creek running through our property with fishing and mudcrabs, so not all bad.

But trying to establish good soil for crop growing out of sand is the most difficult, frustrating and tiresome work we have ever undertaken. We have spread thousands of tons of organic fertiliser and only now, after four years, are beginning to see a return. When we started we couldn't find  equipment suited to, and made for, small farms. So my husband being the inventor that he is built a range of small farm equipment just so we could do the things we wanted to do.

My love is goats, minis and pygmys which I breed to sell. We also have Dorper sheep and chickens. We know the farm will never be self-sustaining, but it keeps us sane. It's the place we call home. I do hope to get to know some of you as time goes by.

Hi Jo,

Welcome to the forum, nice to have you here.

Sounds like you have made some real changes since buying your small farm and turned something that was highly unproductive into something that is now capable of growing food for the whole family.

Look forward to hearing how your your farming journey develops.

Charlie
