Grass Seed Infestation (GSI) in sheep

I am researching the problem of Grass Seed Infestation (GSI) in sheep. Was wondering how farmers usually get the initial hint that some of their sheep have GSI. Is it because sheep start rubbing, scratching, or biting their bodies more extensively? If so, is there some rubbing/scratching/biting form or patterns that implies a GSI issue and not, say, a lice problem?

Paddock Restoration

Hi, we recently bought 24 acres in QLD (intro in New Members section), and have a fairly good history on the property. Unfortunately, the owners prior to us did not do any paddock maintenance as the owners previous to them had done. We now have four years worth of overgrown Rhodes grass and weeds to deal with. We have slashed the horse paddocks down but this has left a large amount of dead, dry and clumpy grass all over the place. I have also had to remove my horses from the paddock as the Rhodes grass has clumped and the stubble is like needles.

Intensive Agriculture

Hi. I'm new to the forum but have followed for a while. We have a farm in south gippsland vic. Our land is 37.62 hectares. We are wanting to construct a dwelling on our land so we can farm the land and manage it on a daily basis. We are under the 40 hectare minimum to be able to build 'as of right'. Our council are asking for us to prove we intend to use the land for 'Intensive Agricultural use'. We agree land under the 40 hectares should be kept for farming and encourage owners to maintain the land.

Concrete Trough Cleaning

Hi there, A thousand apologies if this question has already been covered......... if it has, I couldn't find it. Complete newby to farming - a whopping big 4 months - just loving it!!! I have 130 acres split into 16 paddocks with 16 concrete troughs, all about 1000 ltr capacity with 30 cattle moving daily between them. I am very fussy with their water and when we first moved here, each trough was a hell of a mess. I've drained, scrubbed and refilled them all several times.

Making Silage in suburbia

This may sound like a crazy idea, but I'd like some feed back on the idea of creating Silage out of all of the green waste from my local community, golf courses, mowing companies etc. I understand the logistics of it would be tricky, and timing from when grass and green waste is cut to when it is bagged should be no more than 8 hours or less, but do you think if the logistics could be sorted is this a good idea? Could I simply use all grass clippings, or would there be issues.

Verification

Hi, Got an offer to invest in a farm. Is there a way I can verify: -- The person is really the owner of the farm -- The exact borders (land area) of the farm The question refers to some evidence from source other than the papers the seller presents, like some governmental database of some sort. Thanks, Danny.

Clipping chicken wings

Hi guys, speaking to any experience chicken farmers or free range chicken farms. Do you need to flip their wings? I know their flight height isn't high normally. But if you're running 400+ birds how do you manage this? Or is it not an issue ?
