Pets and chocolate don't mix

Pet owners are reminded of the dangers chocolate poses to pets, especially dogs, with Easter fast approaching.

Biosecurity Queensland Animal Welfare Officer Lisa Beach said it is important pet owners are aware that chocolate poisoning could occur in dogs, cats and birds.

“We might love digging into a basket of Easter eggs, but chocolate is particularly poisonous to dogs,” Ms Beach said.

”The cocoa in chocolate contains a natural compound called theobromine, which affects dogs’ behaviour, heart, and nervous system.

“Small amounts of chocolate can make dogs ill, but large amounts of chocolate can be fatal.”

Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include:

  • restlessness and excitement
  • trembling and nervousness
  • vomiting and diarrhoea
  • increased drinking and increased urination
  • increased heart rare
  • muscle tremors
  • seizures.

Ms Beach said pet owners should make every effort to keep chocolate out of paws reach.

“Symptoms of chocolate poisoning might not be seen until 24 hours after ingestion,” she said.

“As chocolate poisoning isn’t always immediate, it is important pet owners look out for any signs of illness in their animals.

“If you suspect chocolate poisoning in your animal, you should contact your local veterinarian immediately.”

Ms Beach said while the majority of pet owners understood they should not feed chocolate to their dogs, it was often children who left the sweet treat within reach of the family pet.

“Biosecurity Queensland’s Help an Animal Smile Program is focused on helping children learn how to take good care of animals which includes understanding what foods animals can and can’t eat,” she said.

“Children can participate in a variety of free educational tools, including online games, quizzes and activities, which make the learning experience fun.
