Choosing location

Hi - we are looking to purchase a hobby/small farm but are concerned about unknown mining/other activity that will affect the water/soil/air/environment. Are there registers that we can check for this sort of thing when considering an area?

Hi Michads,

to check for mining in Qld. in an area you are interested in you can check out the dept of Natural Resources and mining:  dnrm.qld.gov.au In other states I am sure that they will have similar depts.

The other industries I'm not sure of, so can't help any further than that.

Hope you have a great new year and find the property you want.

Cheers,

Barb

Hi Michads,

Welcome to the forum and Farmstyle.

I'm not aware of any resource that enables you to search mining rights. In most states the crown owns all minerals, the private landholder owns the land and has the right to farm it but has no control over the minerals in the sub-soil.

My family recently experienced this where there had been no mining ever in our farming area and then a state owned entity started exploration and finally reached approval for a coal mine. I don't think there is any way that you can guarantee where you buy will never be mined unless it is an area of conservation or natural significance.

Regards,

Charlie

Hi Michads, In Western Australia you can purchase a Property Interest Report from Landgate - this document covers an amazing array of things including groundwater salinity, mining applications, power infrastructure, contaminated sites in the area, mosquito plague areas, diseases etc. Jus
