Dorper and Johnson grass

Hi we have a 1 ha paddock and are looking at running some dorper sheep. The paddock has been cleared of existing lantana however has pockets of Johnson grass mixed with other types of grasses and weeds. How toxic is Johnson grass and is it essential to get rid of all of it before introducing the stock? Cheers.

Hi there, I would be very cautious with the dormers with access to Johnsons grass. The reason it is dangerous is it produces Prussic acid (cyanide) naturally when stressed. If it is the main component of the dormers diet it will effect them. Most animals avoid the grass as it isn't pleasant to eat but as you are probably aware the dorpers will eat anything plesant or not and will get sick and die. I would get rid of it before introducing stock to the paddock.
Cheers rolly
