Co-operatives have a lot of potential for modern farmers wanting to build relationships with consumers and attract premium prices. This will be the message from a seminar on 3 May in South Perth run by the Department of Agriculture and Food and Fruit West.

Managing cattle bloat on our hobby farm

After this wonderful rain, the paddocks are full of clover. I am wondering what the signs of bloat are, and treatment? Apart from restricting intake, are there any other things we should be doing?

Thanks,

Kath

A new booklet is now available which focuses on practical actions that farm businesses can take now to improve their emissions performance. In many cases, actions to reduce emissions or increase carbon on farms have multiple benefits for farm businesses, such as increasing farm health and profitability.

Starting a small cattle herd

I have purchased an additional 6.5 acres of land with 5 acres of good pasture and 1.5 acres of light bush and a dam. The house and sheds are on another acre or so. Could give me an idea of how many full size cattle and small cattle I could run? I currently run two poll hereford heifers for meat. I would like to start and get into something a bit more specialized such as Belted Galloways? What is the best way to start a small cattle herd?

Successful product: bird scarer

Hello,

Happily I am posting to report a success! After years of hearbreak with birds raiding our persimmon tree, I lashed out on a move-ment actitvated sprinkler last week. It has been a tremendous succes so far. Not a single myna bird feating on the fruit - and we normally have them as thick as a locust plague. I think the fruit bat is staying away too, although it is a cunning creature and it may still be coming when I am not watching (birds all day, bats all night, fruit fly 24/7).

I hope the deterrent factor will last and they won't get used to it.

Colin

Buying weaners to grow and sell - whats involved?

Hi,

Could someone point me in the right direction in regards to what is involved in growing and selling cattle?

I'm sure it is not as simple as buying weaner steers, sticking them in the back paddock and mustering them 12 months later, but in reality what is involved? From my reading, it seems like this would be the best way for me to start my transition into rural life.

Thanks

Adam
