Wanting to farm yabbies, keep getting turtles in our dams, How can we keep the turtles out of our dams ?

We have 60 acres in the south east of western australia and have 4 dams on the property and decided to stock our dams with yabbies, We then found out we had turtles in our dams , we hope they enjoyed the yabbies we fed them. Does anyone have any ideas on how we can get them out of the dams and relocate them and how we may be able to stop them coming back ?  We have a road drain coming into our property and where told we will never be able to stop them. Thanks

Hi Roshar,

Thanks for the post and welcome to the forum.

We used to catch turtles by putting some old meat in a yabby net/cage and then the turtles would swim in and not be able to get out, they can then be safely relocated to another dam. During very wet seasons they do tend to move around alot and can try and relocate back to where they came. Some large square mesh over the drain will let the water through and stop the turtles.

Hi

To remove the turtles you will need to trap them. Look up turtle trapping on youtube.

To keep them out you will need to fence around the dam, a low fence is suitable.

If you have stock drinking the water out of the dam you will need to install a water trough for the stock to drink from, this can be fed from the dam with a cheap solar water pump, with the trough overflow returning to the dam.

Also certain birds will eat the yabbies if they find them in the shallows and depending were you are shags will also help themselves, thats why a lot of dams are netted.
