Bovine Ephemeral Fever, commonly known as 3 day sickness, is a significant disease affecting cattle in northern Australia. It is caused by a virus and transmitted by mosquitoes and biting midges. It is often seen after heavy rainfall and flooding which provides favourable conditions for insect populations to increase.

The disease manifests in three stages. Stage one includes sudden onset fever, shivering, depression, abnormal posture, drooling, discharge from eyes and nostrils, Cow down with 3 day sickness reduced feed intake, and diminished milk production.

Today the nation collectively tips its hat to farmers across the nation for agriculture’s biggest day on the calendar – National Agriculture Day.

National Farmers’ Federation President David Jochinke said the day synonymous with the “I love farmers” logo was a chance to celebrate, inspire and learn.

All eligible sectors can apply for the NSW Sheep and Goats eID Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.  

The harvestable rights limit for coastal-draining catchments was returned to 10% of rainfall runoff in September 2023 (from 30%, which applied from May 2022). Updates were also made to harvestable rights orders for the coastal-draining and central-inland draining catchments to ensure they are easier to apply and enforce.

A 33-year-old livestock producer from the South West has been fined $4000 and ordered to pay court costs of $990.30 after pleading guilty in Bunbury Magistrates Court to 13 charges relating to non-compliance with Western Australia’s biosecurity laws.
