Farming as a tax deduction?

Hi,

I am currently investigating options for reducing my tax liability for next financial year and into the future.  I am currently self employed in the construction industry and have a reasonably high income and very few deductions which means I give way to much money to the government.

Grazing herbs are plant species that are often mistaken by many farmers as weeds in their pasture. An ideal pasture contains a large proportion of vigorous  grasses and to a lesser extent companion species such as clover and herbs.

Grazing herbs include both Chicory (Cichorium intybus) and Plantain (Plantago lanceolata). These are perennial plants that in some harsh environments  behave as free seeding annuals, that is, they grow for one year or less, set seed and die.

New blockies

Hi everyone, it's s nice to be finally able to join this site! My husband and I have finally purchased our dream block of land; just under 600 acres in the North Burnett region of Queensland. We currently both live and work in Brisbane, about a 4 hour drive from the property, but we have lots of family up there who can check in on it for us while we're away. We're working hard to relocate closer to the property, and will both have off-site incomes so that the property remains a quality of life block rather than a commercial enterprise.

Bore water and salinity

We have just purchased our dream property. The water is supplied by a dam and a bore, which has a windmill. The property has previously run cattle, but I have plans of establishing a mixed fruit orchard, a large vegetable garden and a few grape vines. I've been told that the bore water is quite saline, and I've come across something in my research called a magnetic water conditioner (water magnets) which claim to alleviate or minimise this problem so that it is suitable for domestic and irrigation purposes. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this product? Are they expensive?

Hand rearing calves is a popular business for small farmers. The initial investment required for calf rearing is relatively low while labour can generally be  easily worked around off-farm commitments.

Here are some tips on raising calves on a small or hobby farm – focusing on how and what to feed them.

Farm dam

Hullo

This must be a simple question to answer but we've no idea how to approch it.

How do we work out how big to make a dam for water for our sheep and cattle?  We need to plan for water as there is no water system on the property for the animals and we're only on rainwater for the house and summer will come soon enogh.

If sheep and cows are to drink water from the dam, how deep do we make the dam so they can still drink when it gets low. Will the sheep get stuck in it if too deep or sides too steep? Hoq do other farmers do this?

Any ideas will be welcome

What's this $20,000 turnover thing all about?

I have read about needing $20,000 turnover on this forum and also had in mentioned by accountant along with other 'rules' to class promary production activities as a business however, I don;t know where this information comes from. I cannot find anymontion of it on the ATO website, only guidelines as to what constitutes carring on a primary production activity.

New Guy - WA

Hi everyone ,

Unfortunately I am not a farm owner , however the plan is to one day have at least 100 acres .

But to get to the point , I am a recreational hunter / Shooter and would like to ask/offer WA owners if they have need for someone to help with pest eradication ?

I am fully licsenced , SSAA member ( so I have insurance), mature, family man who is happy to be fully self sufficient should needs be .

I will not encroach your house, I will respect your requests and only require access water if staying for more than 2 days .
