Sheep per acre

We are thinking buy a property in East gippsland, 2.5 acres of land, it has perennial grass, 2 paddocks. How many sheep can we keep there. Thank you.

Hi Sena,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the question.

There are lots of variables when it comes to stocking rates, including rainfall, soil/pasture type and fertiliser history.

For your area an estimated average stocking rate would be around 10DSE/hectare or 10 x 50kg wether sheep.

If you don't want to buy in supplementary feed I would be conservative and halve this stocking rate to say 5DSE.

So you could keep 5 wethers on 2.5 aces or 3 ewes with progeny.

Make sure you rotate the animals between the two paddocks to give the pasture a good chance to recover.
