Small farm in Brisbane says hello

Hi,

well I have just spent my first day at my new property in Pullenvale, QLD (about 30 mins SW of the CBD) and couldnt be happier. I have 10 acres, abot a third of it cleared the remainder dams (maybe one acre total) and scrubby bush. I spent today on the brush cutter clearing lantana. I reckon i cleared about 80 sq metres, only 25,000 to go... Anyway, I have been living an organic life for about ten years (since my wife and I had our first child) and with three kids now consuming cubic metres of food, it makes sense to get a bit serious about living a self sufficient lifestyle too!

so before we move in we are making a few changes to the house, including solar, air con and some cosmetic changes to make it ours. After that we are all going to pile in and get started on the garden, big plans for citrus, veges, avocadoes, mango's and any other bits and bobs that take our fancy. the fences arent great, two strand wire (not barbed) with a coppers log top. Id reckon any goat or sheep would get through in a heart beat, but I an going to want to keep both for meat. chooks are obviously first off, we are going to start smallish at about 8 layers, then progressively increase until we dont have to buy eggs anymore (and can get a roast chook every once in a while), we eat 8 dozen organic eggs a week...

so - im pretty happy to be a part of the forum as I am quite sure I am going to need some help! I currently know just enough to be dangerous :D

Cheers,

Barry

Hi Barry,

Congratulations. Finally almost out of the rat race. Might need to do a bit of spraying on that Lantanna though, because it shoots from underground rizomes, and burning only temporarily discourages it. Stopping it flowering by cutting it is a good start because the seeds get carried by birds and they germinate very readily.

It's great to be able to take a breath of fresh air without pollution from exhausts isn't it?

Good luck, and please keep in touch and let us all know how you are going.

Cheers,

Barb
