Kubota or JD small tractor???

Hi all,
I am interested to know what brand is best suited for NZ and AU conditions in the small tractor market between John Deere's 1E - 5E Series against Kubota's M - L Series?
Any thoughts of why one is better than the other for a ten acre property?

Both are good brands and have a variety of sizes so its a matter of which one best suits your needs and price.

They are a lot of tractor for a 10 acre farm so make sure you have a really clear picture of what you want to do with it before going out and buying one. Remember to include the implements you need into your budget.

Hi th_soil74,

I don't have either brand of tractor as I mostly use a contractor or my neighbours. My neighbour has a JD (not sure of the model), they have been very happy with it. They own a number of farming implements and use it for all manner of tasks.

If both tractors are good brands as MJ suggests, maybe the decision comes down to warranty, availability of parts and after sales service. I know a lot of machinery dealerships promise you the earth and as soon as you part with your money they do not want to know you. Maybe this is just how they treat small farmers?

I saw another forum where a member purchased a cheap imported tractor, couldn't get replacement parts and ended up buying a JD. You might like to check the discussion out http://farmstyle.com.au/question/tractors

I don't have a problem with either brands (although some people get uppity when you tell them that have a Dear John for some reason) but I would strongly suggest you talk to both of their local (to you) service departments, even go as far as making a call to them and asking questions like how long they take to get parts in or how much notice they need to fix a problem etc. We've got a Kubota, we've got a Massey and the bloke down the road has got a JD and all are decent and capable tractors but if I was buying another one I'd be hard pressed to buy a Kubota or a Massey purely because our local service guys are terrible. If I lived somewhere else and had options of dealers I would consider all three.
