Hi from central west nsw

Hi everyone,Have just purchased 100 acers in the central west nsw.I am planing on putting in some new pasture next year. So was looking for some advice on what pasture mix would be best suited to this area.We will be running a few sheep, cattle and horses. The soil is mostly red to a little bit of black. The ground has not been worked since 1989. Thanks Nathan.

Hi Nathan,

the seed merchants, such as Southedge or Heratige will be able to advise you on the best pasture for your area.

Also, as you have realised, pasture type depends on the climate, soil and rainfall in your area. The DPI NSW website has a page with soil type, rainfall and recomendations for pasture plantings in various areas of NSW on it. This would probably be very useful to you.

Cheers and a very Happy New Year,

Barb

Hi Nathan,

Welcome to the forum.

If the ground has not had anything done with it for some time I would not look at sowing a pasture this year. Ideally a pasture should be sown during the final year of a 3 year pasture improvement program. Over the first two years the paddock should be cleaned up (reducing weeds) with any soil defeciences corrected. This can be done by sowing forage crops such as ryegrass or oats.

If you do not wish to progress with such an extensive program you will be better to spend your money on improving the existing pasture by spreading fertiliser and clover.

Ideally you should start with a soil test prior to making any decisions

I have written an article on 'Pastures for livestock' which outlines which pastures species are suitable for different types of livestock.

Regards,

Charlie
