Mowing around the house paddock

Hi

I have a house paddock with 5 acres, which was formerly used for cattle grazing (so its a bit uneven) and its gently sloping.

For the last couple of years I have used a Signature 23 HP ride on mower, which is okay but it takes 4 to 5 hours and is becoming a chore.

I am planning to buy a tractor for other jobs around the farm (110 acres - moving bales, trees and earthworks).

I am considering buying a slasher to attach to the tractor (probably a JD 6220 - 90 hp tractor) to use to cut the 4 of the 5 acres around the house and the ride on will do the rest. I am looking for tips on what to consider and also keen to understand if and what type of slasher will give me a finish similar to the ride on mower.

Thanks in advance for your help.

John

Hi John,

Have had a quick look around the net and it seems the lowest cutting setting on most slashers is around 40mm-45mm. I don't how low you want to go, but that's about 1 1/2 - 2" in the old measurement.

In the hot summers we experience in Qld. It's probably better not to have the grass shorter than that  anyway, otherwise the soil dries out. When that happens, grass starts to drop roots as a survival mechanism and so it takes much longer for it to recover once you do get rain. Just a thought anyway.

Cheers,

Barb

Hi John,

Welcome to the forum.

From my experience a slasher will never do as neat a job as a mower. A slasher will usually have 2 large blades per disc and in long grass they seem to leave it untidy.

Do you need something as large as 90 HP?. John Deere do a 32HP compact tractor with a 62 inch drive over mowing deck which can be removed when it is not being used? You can find some more information about it here https://www.deere.com.au/en_AU/products/equipment/compact_utility_tractors/2000_series/2032R/2032R.page?

The only other thing I can think of is a zero turn mower, however most of them are pricy and don't offer the same flexibility compared to a compact tractor.

Charlie
