Just purchased a farm, now what to farm??

Well I've just purchased 50 acres 1/3 is cleared and fenced and suitable for use the other 2/3 is scrub and will take a while to clear. I'm wondering what kind of stock I should start researching. Also what's the rules reguarding tax as I'd love to start small with a few mini cattle and keep clearing out the back till I have 50 useable acres. If it helps property is in central qld (Yeppoon/rockhampton area )and I work away from time to time so they will need to be low maintaince. Must also note the idea of this property wasn't to be profitable or even be a farm, it's just more the lifestyle change. But tax write OFF's would be nice.

Hi Gros31,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the question.

If you have cleared the scrub chances are there will be very little pasture. If anything, you could look at getting a small number of dry stock (heifer/cows) or even wether's depending on the farms infrastructure. I would suggest to get a soil test and look at improving soil nutrients that are limiting before researching pastures that may be suitable to sow on the farm.

Regards,

Charlie
