Can somebody refer me to a Rabbit Breeder?

Hi there,

I'd like to purchase a couple of NZ White Bucks and 4 Californian Doe's.

I am at my wits end trying to find a Breeder that sells either breed.

I'm in Victoria, so hopefully somebody can assist?

Hi Hopefully,

Welcome.

I am in Qld. where it is illegal to keep rabbits, however there is an association for rabbit breeders in Victoria where you are. It is called the Rabbit Breeders Association of Victoria and it's website is:

 http://rbavinc.com.au/breeders_4.html

I hope this helps,

Barb

Thanks Barb,

I have looked at that site.  Only 1 Breeder listed for the 2 Meat type Rabbits i want.

Either the industry is dead or has gone underground and Google can't assist!

Hi Hopefully,

The commercial rabbit industry is very much dead. Most producers have either gone broke or moved out of the industry. The calicivirus made it very difficult to breed rabbits with animals needing to be vaccinated againt the virus. This along with the targetting of legitimate farms by animal rights groups has put a stop to the industry.

If you find a breeder be sure to drop the forum a note.

Regards,

Charlie

I too have found it very hard to find NZW's. We are trying to be self sufficient and breed the NZW's for our own meat but also to sell to those who want to do the same. Had a lady drive from Adelaide to pick up a doe last week.

We got 2 litters from our doe and buck before they died from the stinking Calicivirus. I have 2 bucks left from the first litter but i will be keeping one of them, they are vaccinated now for Calici. They are 10 or 11 weeks, cant remember exactly without looking at my paperwork.

The doe died with her new litter of 14 being 1 week old. We have been hand rearing them since she died and are down to 9, 2 that died were runts and then other 3 died either from cold or just couldnt deal with moving to formula. We lost them the first day. The nine we have left are doing well. We use Wombaroo Rabbit Formula which is the BEST product on the market for rabbits, do not litsten to anyother advice regarding feeding.

So i will have some kittens available in 3-4 weeks time. I will however be keeping 1-2 does. These kittens will be vaccinated for calici as well.

I have also managed to find a breeder of NZW and will be getting 2, 12 week old does tomorrow that are also vaccinated against calici. These have been expensive at $60 each.

Im located in Bendigo for anyone interested.
