Raising Goats

Hi,

I am a new member and would like some advice on raising goats for milking. I am venturing into organic goats milk soap, and would like to know the following:

  • How many goats I would need to make soap for monthly/fortnightly market stalls as opposed to commercial sales
  • Land requirements per goat (I have 280 treed acres)
  • Best fencing and rotation schedules

I have read many books on the subject so any other practical suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Farming Part Time

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a farm just outside Dubbo of appoximately 500 acres, however my job in town won't cover the mortgage repayments. Would it be viable to keep my job in town whilst somehow working the farm part time to offset the extra mortgage cost? I was looking at something along the lines of buying in Weaners, fattening them up and reselling them so it wouldn't be as labour intensive and any work required could be done in the afternoons and on weekends. Any other ideas are most welcome!

Thanks!

Does anyone recommend electric shears for merinos?

hello we have two merinos and it is increasingly difficult to find anyone to come and shear them.

i see there are some electric shears that the sellers say are for sheep, but has anyone any experience in using them on Merinos?

i have shorn sheep before, (what child growing up on a farm in NZ hasn't?) but dont want to buy the gear if it isn't strong enough to deal with our two 'woolies'.

any comment gratefully received.

Creating an income on a hobby farm

Hello

I have 200 acres north of Crows Nest in Queensland and am looking to try an earn an income off the property. I do run some Hereford cattle, which I really enjoy. We are about to sell off the calves from last year.

I would like to spend more time on the farm and are looking at ways to create more income there. We do not live on the property.

Has anyone raised goats and who do you sell them to afterwards?

Another idea was growing some crops, however water is limited and that would be much more labour intensive.

Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Hello all,

How do you stop wallabies?

How do you stop wallabies?

Hello,

I have recently planted a small grove of hazelnut trees. They are doing their best to grow but so far none of them have any leaves because wallabies strip them naked as soon as a bud appears. I suspect that if they don't succeed in growing some leaves pretty soon, it will be all over.
