Hi!!! from Charters Towers (North QLD)

Hi Everyone!

Im Tash and me, my husband and our kids live about 1/2 hour from Charters Towers on 100 acres (give or take).

We raise commercial chooks for a living and also breed purebred chickens, but can never keep up with demand for the purebreds but we try!  We also make the best goats milk soap using milk from our own goats. Between the 2 and various other dabblings, we make enough $$ for both of us to stay at home full time, with some sacrifices of course (yeah, drinking Jim Beam instead of Jack Daniels lol)

Farming Part Time

Hi,

I'm looking at buying a farm just outside Dubbo of appoximately 500 acres, however my job in town won't cover the mortgage repayments. Would it be viable to keep my job in town whilst somehow working the farm part time to offset the extra mortgage cost? I was looking at something along the lines of buying in Weaners, fattening them up and reselling them so it wouldn't be as labour intensive and any work required could be done in the afternoons and on weekends. Any other ideas are most welcome!

Thanks!

Does anyone recommend electric shears for merinos?

hello we have two merinos and it is increasingly difficult to find anyone to come and shear them.

i see there are some electric shears that the sellers say are for sheep, but has anyone any experience in using them on Merinos?

i have shorn sheep before, (what child growing up on a farm in NZ hasn't?) but dont want to buy the gear if it isn't strong enough to deal with our two 'woolies'.

any comment gratefully received.

Cheryl
