Help with stocking numbers

Hi there, I am brand new to this forum but am looking at purchasing a property of approx 100 acres in gippsland VIC and wanted to know roughly what the cattle to acres ratio would be.  The property is a mixure of rye and native grass along with some couch grass..

Welcome to the site. Looks like you will be really getting into it unfortunately I can't help you with the stocking numbers, wrong area for me, but my advice would be to start out conservatively, cell graze and improve the species mix in your pasture. This will increase your stocking load but always remember to stock for the bad time, that way you always have a reserve. Cheers Rob.

Hi,
The average stocking rate for Gippsland will be 15-20 DSE/ha. DSE stands for dry sheep equivalent (1 wether in old terms).
Factors that will influence the stocking rate include:
- improved or naturalised pasture (native)
- history of fertiliser (phosphorus, potassium or sulphur) use
- other variable include grazing management, rainfall, soil type.
Regards,
Charlie
