Vaccination of weaner cattle

Hello,

We are new to farming and we recently purchased our first lot of weaner heifers and steers. Can some please advise what we should drench and vaccinate our calves with please

Hi FDE,

Welcome to the small farms forum, nice to have you as part of the community.

For the vaccine you should use a 6 in 1 (there are a few brand names)which will protect against all major diseases. The booster shot should 4-6 weeks later. Ensure when you are administering the injection that it is just under the skin, too deep and they can develop a lump at the site of the injection.

In regard to the drench, i would select a broad spectrum backline (for ease of application), if you are in a liver fluke area it should contain flukicide (for the control of liver fluke). Broad spectrum drenches active constituents are based on either benzimidazole or levamisole (or a combination), it is a good idea to rotate between the different groups to reduce the risk of drench resistance.

Also, once you drench the cattle it is a good idea to leave them in the yards for 24-48 hours until the drench starts working and they empty out. This will reduce the risk of your pastures being contaminated.

Hope this is of help.

Regards,

Charlie
