pto seeder

hi all,
Looking at purchasing a pto driven seed spreader and have a few questions.

I'm looking to spread some seed which specifies a 5kg per hectare (cocksfoot) sow rate as the seed is very fine. Will a pto driven spreader do they job? Will it be able to spread the slow enough and far enough wide? Or would I need to mix fertiliser with the seed and spread it that way?

Mixing seed with fertilizer doesn't work well as the heavy fertilizer pellets are thrown a long way and the light seed falls quickly resulting in an uneven coverage. Can be made to work if you ignore the fertilizer coverage and concentrate on the width of seed spread. If you want to bulk up the seed mix to spread it thinly you need to use a filler that is inert, like sawdust or dry sand.

You can request to have the grass seed coated which will make it heavier and easier to spread. The coating is usually lime based, insecticide can also be applied to the seed if it is going to be broadcast to reduce the amount carried away by ants.

A smaller spreader is prob better.

I recently tried to mix some seed with sand etc, it was more work than doing it manually as it kept clogging uo, and moisture at all will stop it working, so the conical spreader is not best for seen, I have a tow behind and some push ones, they work better, and when you take into account all the stopping etc, is about the same time wise.

If doing only a few acres , you can do it even with a small hand broadcaster, or indeed with your hand.

If using the conical one, as someone else said, just look at how far it is throwing the seed, and then work from that, I would guess it may take tractor width, so up and down as if your were discing at tractor width. You also need more seed than when direct drilled, and you need something to make it have proper soil contact, so up the rate again for that, your not going to get away with 5kg a ha

We have 10 acres and do all spreading by hand with a bucket. Just time the rain with a bit of moisture in ground and off we go. Its mainly run down pasture with bare patches and we just mix an annual Rye with some white clover. There is perenia. Rye and clover that comes back after summer but its mainly spreading bare parches to beat the weeds.
Very low cost and bit of fun when it starts to germinate.
