Buying cattle on a hobby farm

Hi all, I just bought my first little slice of Australia. It's only a little hobby farm and it has a fair bit of work to get it up and running but we will get there. I'm looking at buying myself a few heifers to keep the grass down for the time being. My question is if I am only buying for personal use and not to sell what do I need to do to buy legally in qld? I know this question has probably come up a lot so thank you all for your time

Hi 10drew,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for a common question as by new farmer's.

There are a number of legal requirements, which can incur hefty penalties if not observed, when it comes to owning, transporting and selling livestock. Some are state imposed and will vary depending on where your property is, whilst others are mandatory national regulations.

Each property that wants to keep livestock must be registered and obtain a PIC (property identification code). Cattle producers must observe the National Identification System (NLIS) requirements which is a system for livestock identification and traceability. Some of these requirements include:

  • National Vendor Declaration NVD/Waybill
  • Waybills
  • Travel Permits
  • Brands and Earmarks
  • Withholding Periods (WHPs)
