bobby calves

Hi
Im thinking of getting a couple of bobby calves. One for the freezer and one for sale.
I can't keep more than 3 at a time. My place is too small. I have a pic number.
Can you sell just one steer at the sales yard ? Or where would you send it ? I don't want to use gumtree or private sales. What would be best option?

Alternatively, Would it be better to buy a jersey house cow and use the milk to raise a bobby calf for the freezer. Meaning that only the jersey would be on the property permanently and the calves would be destined for the freezer.

What are your ideas ?

Thanks

Hi Alison, it is possible to sell only one through the saleyards. Your best option would be to contact your local stock agent.
Its tough question on on raring your own on a house cow or buying young calves in.
Depends on your acerage and time.
If affordable it can be easiest to buy calves just weaned so you dont have issues of having to feed them milk.
If you do like the whole journey of having your calf born and then raisef on a house cow then buy a cow in calf.
There is no right or wrong way the whole adventure is fun and interesting.
The toughest part is when you rare a calf for sale or slaughter it can be very hard to say goodbye.
