Trauma calves hoof

Hi..I have a 4 day old calf..whose mother stood on her hoof and removed about 1 inch of the poor things toe..we stopped the bleeding with bandage and sprayed on yellow lotion antiseptic and then bandaged with elastic bandage ... will be giving the calf pennicillin tonight.  How often should we change bandage..keeping the mother and calf penned and calf is putting weight on back leg and nursing properly..Should we be doing anything else.  Scared to remove dressing in case bleeding starts again.

Thanks.

Hi there,

as long as the root of the claw of the hoof isn't damaged, it should heal well. As long as the calf doesn't appear to be feverish and showing signs of infection, I would check it after 5 days. You may find that the bandage has stuck to the wound, so you may have to soak the bandage in sterile antiseptic solution to remove it, so as not to open the wound again.

Will interested to know how the little one gets on.

Cheers,

Barb
