Cattle preg testing via blood is easy and effective

Has anyone else in SA tried Cattle preg testing via Blood Samples. You get accurate test results back within hours confirming Pregnant or Empty status. Accurate from 28 days from last mating. Its $44.60 for one sample on a fee sliding scale down to $9.90/sample for 10 samples or more. You can take the bloods or local staff will come and do it for you. With limited paddock feed, high hay costs (if you can source any) this has helped with our herd management. The same organisation can also arrange for an AI program to be done on any non pregnant cows and heifers, they service most areas of SA on a regular basis , AI saves us running extra bulls which = less hassle and less feed wasted.

Hi Cattlebreeder,

Is this a personal recommendation from your experience or an advertisement, as we do not allow advertising in the forum.

Charlie , personal experience , in fact we did another cow and three heifers this morning and had the results back within a couple of hours.Highly recommend it to smaller farms or when owners are unsure of the pregnancy status of their cattle. Not all areas would have access to such a service but many would. FYI one of my heifers must have slipped her calf in early phase , I retested her today because we saw her messing around like she was coming on or going off heat the other day....sure enough Empty. Ahh natural selection at work again.

Hi Cattlebreeder,

Thanks for the reply and I appreciate the clarification.

Do vets offer this service or someoneone else?

It definately sounds like it would be a useful tool for a hobby farmer running a few head of cattle.

Thanks,
Charlie

In SA it is provided by a Herd Improvement company , with less and less large animal vets around these days or less vets providing preg test services full stop in semi built up areas it is a easy option.
