Pasture improvement

Hi guys my name is brad and I'm located in south west Victoria I've always leased land here and there and reared plenty of calves as a hobby farmer but I've recently expanded just a little bit and purchased 80 acres. Of which the grass on it is looking quite tired and it had been kept highly stocked and I plan to start to seed drill some of it out but my question is am I able to drill a perinnial seed straight into it next autumn (spraying out first) as I know most dairy farmers in my region might drill an annual then follow up with the perinnial so I basically wanted to know the negatives to drilling it straight in and/or why the farmers go an annual first

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. You can drill straight in after spraying out if you are using a perennial ryegrass, this species has strong seedling vigour. If you are planning on using another perennial species like phalaris I would suggest not to as they traditionally have poor seedling vigour and do not compete well with weeds. The main reason why most farmers plant an annual species is because of the high seedling vigour (they get up and out of the ground quickly), they produce a large amount of feed in a short period of time and they compete well against weeds which helps to clean the paddocks up prior to planting a perennial pasture.

Regards,

Charlie
