Exit suburbia to live the dream

Hi All My wife and I plus two daughters (10 & 8) have spent all our lives in suburbia. Over the last 10 years my wife has had a dream to relocate to the country and live off the land whilst I was reluctant to leave my comfort zone, work, friends etc. Last year all the planets aligned for some reason for both of us and long story short, we bought 10acres in Yarra Glen in January. Couldn't be happier, wife is extremely happy, kids happy at school and we have the most fantastic and lovely neighbours we could only ever imagine. Veggie garden, although planted late, has given us plenty of produce and looking forward to the next few years to establish a small orchard, bees and keep 2-3 sheep for meat and to keep the grass down. A neighbour said to me "just chip away at it".......... and that's the philosophy we're going to follow. Looking forward to many visits to the farm style forums Cheers Chris

Does sound like you have landed on your feet. Good luck to you. For 10 acres of self sufficiency permaculture is well worth looking into. Have a dig around in http://permaculturenews.org especially what they have done to Zaytuna Farm. Geoff Lawton has his own website with videos that are worth watching. Think about chicken tractors and cell grazing for your sheep, improve your pastures with these techinques as well as the veges and food forests. Keep us posted Rob.
