Who do I get to put down cattle?

I have 10 wild cows that are simply to aggresive to handle etc I have tamed them for 1 year with improvement but they are still very wild. Ofcourse i'd prefer if I could load them but they go absolutely mad in the yard... I was told to get a vet but just wondering what method do they use to put them down and will they charge me alot

Hi,

It sounds as if you may not have a lot of experience handling cattle and may need to have the assistance of an experienced stockman to handle and load them. I suggest that you enquire at your local stock and station agents as they will usually know stockmen who will do small contracts. I had one come in to help me brand and castrate bulls for me a few years ago, for instance.

Why are they so wild, are they scrub cattle that were on the block when you bought it? On the stations up north, the only time cattle see humans is usually when they are weaned, castrated and vaccinated and then once a year when they are rounded up to vaccinate and sort for market. So those cattle are usually not what you would term 'quiet' and are pretty wild. However, the stockmen who handle them are very experienced and know how to deal with them.

Having them put down by the vet, who will probably shoot them, rather than sending them to the abbatoire, is going to be very costly as after they are put down, you will need to bury/burn them or haul them away for disposal (at huge cost).

These are my thoughts about it anyway. Hope they are of some help,

Very silly to just euthanase and waste them.

If they can be yarded they can be loaded. I have seen and assisted wild scrub bulls caught and loaded. What is their breed and status?

They can aslo be fed and quietened in the yard and maybe they need to be fattened a bit which this will acvhieve.

Otherwise there are accredited shooters who can shoot them. Contact the local Ag Dept office.

Where are they?
