Which ride on mower do I use?

Hi everyone, I have just bought a 16 acre property in country Vic. It is mostly flat with a slope at the back that probably wouldn't be more than 30 degrees. My question is; Before we get any livestock we may have to mow the entire property. What type of mower should we be using and will it be able to handle the slope? I've been told a 52" cutting deck would be a good way to go. a friend has a hustler zero turn which they recommend. We have probably 30 trees to mow around. any advice would be greatly appreciated. We're new to this :)

Why do you have to mow before getting any stock? rob.

Because we won't be getting stock for a while and we'll have an area around the house with no stock in it.

Hay Pat,

Welcome to the forum, great to have you on board.

If you have a number of trees to mow around I would be definately be looking a a zero turn mower as it will save you a lot of time. I recently purchased a cox ride on, 42 inch cut, twin disc, 4 blades on each disc, 19.5 horse power. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of other ride on mower brands, howevr I figure that means there is less things that can go wrong.

Have you had a look at the John Deere Eztrackhttp://www.deere.com.au/en_AU/products/equipment/zero_turn_mowers/z200_eztrak_series/z200_eztrak_series.page?

I was always of the opion that the zero turn mowers were double the price of a normal ride on. However, a family member of mine recently purchased the 42 inch model, 20 horsepower for similar money to my cox ride on and they are very happy with the purchase.

I have written an article on selecting a ride on lawn mower which you may find useful

Cheers, Charlie. All helpful advice. How much of an issue does a slope pose?

Grillo they are a hill climber, google them for some reason I cant paste the link to this page :/

Zero turns are terrible at slopes, having a wider wheel base and lower to the ground does make them safer than a normal ride on mower, but they are still not recommened on anything over 18 degrees.

But if you just have the one hill, you could mow the rest and just whipper snipper the slope, this is what we do.

Also if you have alot of trees I guess make sure your deck isnt to big to get around them?.... Hustler have an excellent sport 42" or 48" range. :)
