Oaten Hay and implements

Hi all,

Firstly I would like to say that this website is great and an excellent idea, so well done!

We have just purchased a property in South Australia just norht og Gawler. The land is very flat and clean. Great soil and is currently being leased by the next door neighbour for wheat. We want to crop for oaten hay to be bailed into small square bails. Have the tractor, bailer and rake. I was wondering what is the best type of ploughs/cultivators, seeders and mowers best suited to this type of operation. Farm is only 5.6ha but tonnage is really good up this way so produces good hay in good amounts. Also what is the best type of seed and plant rate? Dont want to spend $$$ so any help on types would be good. Also who can you get to check condition of the hay before bailing as we are hoping we can sell some to the horse people around the area.

I hope I have covered it all at the moment.

Cheers

Ben

Ben,

Welcome to the forum.

As to your question, I cannot talk about productivity and returns in your area, different part of the country. I would also ask if you really think it viable to get haymaking equipment for 5ha. Even second hand you would be sinking a lot of money into this and I would have my doubts if you would ever get a return on your investment.

I think you need to have a look around at prices and maintenance costs then balance that against productivity and returns to see if it is viable. It just seems too much like over investing to me.

Cheers
Rob.

Hi Rob,

What I didn't add in the question was that family also has a good amount of acreage in the same area that we also will use. I'm not worried about costs etc in this forum its more the knowledge from other farmers re the above questions.

Cheers

Ben
