Newbee saying Hi and Help lol

Hi my name is Lisa I am middle aged+++ and single and a Pom I have spent a little time on a sheep farm in the wheat belt with a friend Now back in Perth I have decided to try to live my dream of a Hobby farm not wanting to rush in to fast my first step is going to be having roughly 10 sheep on 10 acres of agistment farmland not 10 mins from my home. I am in the process of coming to an agreement with the Licencer of the land he has asked $25.00 per week which I think is good Can anyone please offer me any advice and or guidance as I am a newbee and would welcome any assistance offered Many thanks in advance for your help Lisa

Lisa, Welcome to the forum. Now some general comments. Get the lease in writing. How long is the lease? Is there a good water supply? Can you subdivide the area to allow cell grazing? Cheers Rob.

Hi Lisa, If you are hoping to sell the sheep and make a profit I don't think you will with only ten sheep. If you purchase a breed that requires shearing you certainly won't, and you may find it difficult to get a shearer to do a small number, though I know they are around in the cities. You will have worming also, and you may have to buy feed if the pasture gets low. Finally factor in transport costs. I am in the Wheatbelt, the going rate out here for lease is between $30 and $45 per acre per year. To those standards $25 per week for 10 acres is expensive, though close to home for you is obviously important. I hope I haven't rained on your dream, margins are slim at the best of times in farming, however nothing beats the satisfaction, and if you want to do it you will find a way! Angie

Hi Lisa,

This gentleman realises that you are what we call a "new chum' just from your accent. The amount he wants for ajistment is pretty expensive. It shouldn't be no more than $10.00 per month Maximum = a dollar per sheep. I agree with  the other gentleman who answered the question, it probably should be half that. Also make sure the fencing on the property is dog proof and that there is plenty of water and feed available for the sheep.

 

No, you won't make much money out of ten sheep, but you could grow the sheep on and have the local butcher or abbatoire butcher one for yor own meat supply  from time to time and maybe sell a few to cover the cost of ajistment and a few dollars extra for yourself. However, be aware that sheep need to be drenched for worms and other parasites, which costs money (given oral worming mixture about 3 monthly). Also if needed, backlined with anti lice treatment from time to time.
