Miniature Cattle

I have just recently found the Farm Style website and must say I'm very impressed with the range of content and information available. It is certainly wonderful to see so many people living their dreams and sharing their information to the "layman farmer". 

 

I am very interested in miniature cattle and have approx 3 (very grassy at times) acres near Mackay Qld. Just minutes ago I purchased Margo Hayes book "Small Cattle for Small Farms" and eagerly wait its arrival to gather more info.

 

I have some preparation to do on the property yet before buying some cattle but I am hopeful that someone can advise me of any miniature cattle breeders within a few hours of Mackay especially miniature herefords. I've noticed the registered producers on this site but have not yet contacted them and at this stage as they are a little far away for a visit. Any information on other breeds will be much appreciated as well thanks.

Hi Jeno,

I don't know of any miniature Hereford breeder. However there are Low Line and Dexter cattle breed societies on line and I'm sure a quick search on the web should bring up their web sites for you. Most breed societies list the location of members and contact addresses or phone numbers. Using that you should be able to find a breeder nearer to your location.

 

3 Acres is not a large property, so try not to overstock as cattle eat more than you would think. Grass is lush in the wet season, but will soon hay off in the dry season, meaning that they will probably need to be hand fed if they are not to lose condition. This can be quite expensive. I suggest you start with 3 head and see how you go from there before buying in more.

I would suggest that you get in touch with Margo Hayes from Vitulus Lowline stud, they are located in QLD and she will be able to advise on the best breed for your area. Below is a link to her contact page

Herefords tend to be more of a southern cattle breed, you may find it difficult to locate a breeder of minature herefords in your local area. I would be asking a breeder, how they handle the heat, humidity and ticks. Below is a link to breeders of minature herefords in QLD

Hi we have 8 mini Herefords on our property at Samford. They are very easy to look after. Being on the coast ticks are the biggest item to manage. At one stage we had 2 bulls and a cow running on about 3 acres. In winter we had to give them additional food. I have a 18 month old bull for sale if you are interested. Good luck Jason

Hi Jeno,

 

I have been breeding Lowlines for over 20 years & find them great for smaller farms - are very efficient feed converters, have great temperaments & very easy to manage. You just have to remember that you may have to feed them in the dry times but they don't need as much feed as larger breeds.

 

We don't call them 'miniature' as they are actually direct descendants of original Aberdeen Angus when the size of all cattle breeds were much more compact & feed efficient than they are today.

 

There are some lovely Lowline people near Mackay who you should contact. They will be happy to help you with any information about the breed.
