G'day, from Melbourne's South Side

I'm a 24yo, from the South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

I've just completed my carpentry apprenticeship and have no financial debts and a clean finacial record.

Ofcourse the first step into the farming would be buying some land. I have no idea where to start. I have a small savings. Is it possible for someone of my age to afford a small farm within 3 hours from the city? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Hi p pelly,

welcome. I guess it all depends on how much land, what type, what the soil is like, is there water available, and how much money you would have for a deposit. You will also need spare cash for the set up: living quarters, sheds, machinery, stock etc. Whatever yo decide to do, believe me it will always cost more than you think it will.

I would strongly advise you to keep your job which will keep income coming in while you establish yourself. However, in my opinion, there is no other way to live, than outside the hustle and bustle of the city. A lot of folk I know, keep a job in town and only go to their country properties each weekend, while they establish everything.

If you have no experience in farming, you would have to decide what you are interested in doing. For instance do you want to grow fruit and vegetables or do you think perhaps, that you might want to raise livestock, or run a mixed farm? I would advise you to have a soil test done on any property you think you may want to purchase as many old properties had sheep or cattle dips on them that used to use arsenic, which is residual in soils.

When you decide what you would like to do with a farm, get your hands on every book or info website that you can. A good starting point would be this wesite as there is a wealth of free info on it.

Good luck with your project,

Barb
