Farming

Hello

I have recently joined.

I am keen to understand how to get into organic farming. I have no experience in farming. I have been in the software business for 10+ yrs and my wife is the health care sector
We are currently moving out from Melbourne to Devonport.

Appreciate if any help can be given on how and where to start with farming? Investments and effort required?

Hi Aveen,

If you are looking to produce certified organic crops etc., then you will need to go through the certification process. There is an application fee for this. The process of becoming a certified Organic farmer involves among other things, soil testing as many old farms have arsenic in the soil from old cattle dips and the soil may also have traces of DDT which used to be used for controlling insect pests on crops. Naturally the soil would need to be certified free of these.

There will of course, as in any farming, be a lot of effort involved but there's great satisfaction to be had from working with the soil out in the fresh air. As I'm not an accountant, unfortunately, I can't tell you what the set-up and on-going costs would be.
