Beef cattle snowy mountains

Hi all,

Please excuse my ignorance but I was wondering on the farming of beef in the snowy mountain region:

- do they require bought feed or can they rely on the land?

- is this better breve dine or fattening country?

- what is the rainfall like and is it reliable?

100 questions I know but thanks in advance ;)

Most of your questions are piece of string ones and really rely on regional knowledge so asking other farmers in your area is a good idea but here goes.

Do you need to buy feed? If you match the stocking rate with the production of the land then you should have enough feed. Its the same no matter where you are located, this balance has to be established. I would purposely understock and see how it goes, if you have extra feed you could slowly add mroe stock but always keep in mind that winter growth will be slower so your stocking rate should be based on this.

I don't understand your second question so I can't have a go at it.

I would check out the Bureau of Meterology for rainfall patterns for your area. I am not at all sure how to handle the snow in winter though, something I have absolutely no experience with.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Cheers
Rob.
