Dexter in the tropics

Hi there , we are livng in the tropical north of Qld and were wondering if Dexter would be ok up this way. If not what other miniture cattle would people sujest . we are looking at only having 6 cattle so to care for them by hand , as in tick treatments. Also what feed would suit them best , we have a high rainfall in the wet season and are always green.

Dexters, and most other small breeds, will survive as long as they are looked after and checked regularly. They will need ample shade in summer and to be kept free of ticks and other parasites such as buffalo fly. If you have ample quality green grass then that should be all they need. Discuss with your local DPI what are the grasses on your farm to ensure they are of high nutrition. They can also advise what deficiences are present in your area so you can supplement those with either a block or loose minerals.
